Why you are Failing to Reach Your Goals

What are your goals?
I had someone who was a teacher, a mentor, an employer, and a friend ask me that during my 3rd year of college, and like the typical student I said “I want to make a lot of money”. He paused and said “ok, but what do you want to do?”. I repeated “I want to make a lot of money”, and he paused again, chuckled, then correctly deduced that I wasn’t ready to answer him.
Thinking back on that question I now realize what he was getting at.
Well Dean Apprey, I know that this response is soon to be a decade late, but I think I am finally ready to answer…but naturally, because it’s me, there are multiple parts to this perfectly simple question.
I want to be:
Influential
I want to be a disruptor and a thought leader. I have spent a lot of my time learning how business and people work for the main reason that I want to the able to successfully make their systems better. I want to inspire a collective to see things differently, and encourage them to follow their guts no matter how scary their change might be,
(Side note: if you are doing something right then it is going to be scary)
and I have decided to measure my success by the invitations I receive to speak at TEDx events and TED talks.
Famous…adjacent
That's right famous-adjacent, meaning close to the pretty people, on-air personalities, the entertainers and musical icons. I want to see their craft in person, but I do not want to have to deal with the stress that stardom brings. I am talking C-level celeb at most; constantly hoping to stay in the shadows.
I would like to be invited to events like the Grammies and Oscars, and personally know my favorite artists like Chance the Rapper, Donald Glover, Jhene Aiko, and Drake without having to be them, or deal with what is expected from these superstars.
See being famous adjacent is sounding more and more appealing isn’t it!
Financially Secure
I am pretty sure you saw this one coming. What sane human being wants to be in debt for life? I want to be secured in a way that I remain financially aware, but don’t feel overbearing concerned if I want to take a trip. I want to regain the mental space that finances are constantly stealing, and take care of my family, especially Mama. As that famous saying goes “…and I pay my mama bills, I ain’t got no time to chill” #CardiB
Lastly, Marry my Rock and My Queen
There are only a couple people in the world that fit your special brand of weird, and if you are lucky enough to find someone like that, you should grab hold and not let go. I have found someone that not only accepts me, but makes me better, so best believe there will be a ring on that finger soon.
That's my list, what is yours? Where are you aiming to be in the next year, month or week? We'll figure out the how later, but if you don't figure out where you want to go you probably won’t get there.
By The Way, it is ok if you don’t know what the answer to that question is (it has taken me the better half of a decade to find out), but you have to start thinking about your goals if you hope to me more than a cog in a machine.
